From Hobby to Profession: Lennart Christensen's journey as a WordPress web developer
Read my story of how a simple hobby turned into my career as a WordPress web developer. It all started as a passion for web design and websites, but it evolved into much more. Today, I'm proud to call myself a professional in WordPress development.
From hobby to livelihood: My journey into the world of WordPress web development
Some of the first WordPress website development I did for a company can be found in my archive, dated 07 November 2007. However, my interest in web design and websites etc. started earlier and I remember having a spare time job at a machine dealer where I also helped update the website with pictures etc. via ftp. It must have been in the early noughties. A lot has happened since then, and both the opportunities and my skills have obviously evolved considerably since then 😂
Over the years, I have built up a palette of skills and experience in web development, specialising in WordPress. I'm always ready to meet new challenges and dedicated to providing customised solutions that match specific needs and wishes. I also offer technical support and help with DNS, PHP/server and CDN etc.
From freelance to agency to self-employed: My Journey as a WordPress Web Developer
After a few years as a freelancer - with education and other work on the side - I founded Meresalg ApS in 2013, and in 2016 it became my full-time job, along with two partners who bought into the company. At the time, Meresalg ApS was a full-service web agency with a primary focus on website design/development and online marketing, including SEO optimisation.
We moved into an office in Kolding, everything was new and exciting. We worked hard and, like most people at the start of something new, we strived for success, which can be challenging at times. We put in long hours and worked hard to establish ourselves and build a good reputation.
We had defined our own "triangle area" centred around Esbjerg, Kolding and Tønder. These were the areas where we wanted to focus on meeting potential companies for collaboration. Our choice of this area was primarily due to the fact that I personally lived in Esbjerg, Tønder was an area we had strong roots in, and Kolding was the city where our office was located at the time. Although we had defined our "triangle area" as Esbjerg, Kolding and Tønder with a focus on meeting local companies there, it didn't mean that we only worked with companies from these areas. We wanted to meet companies from all over Denmark. I remember many long drives to places like Northwest Jutland or North Zealand for meetings with potential customers, which unfortunately never turned into work or assignments. Although many of these meetings were more fruitless than we had hoped, we still managed - thanks to our luck (skill, if you will) - to secure some exciting jobs and projects to work on. Some are still companies I work with to this day.
One of the important lessons we learned was the importance of saying no and specialising in a specific field. In the beginning, we were eager to take on any task and say yes to any request that came our way. We wanted to show our versatility and fulfil all our customers' needs. But over time, we realised that this approach wasn't always the most effective. By spreading ourselves too thin and trying to be experts in everything, we discovered that we couldn't deliver the same quality and expertise as specialising in one particular area.
After careful consideration and evaluation of our company structure and strategy, my two partners and I decided to make a bold decision. We recognised that in order to focus on our individual strengths and goals, we needed to split our company.
I also realised that my dream wasn't about running an agency with fancy premises, lunch schemes and a team of employees and all that comes with it. Although I may have thought so at first, I realised that this wasn't what motivated me. What I really missed was the close dialogue with different companies. I wanted to offer a more personalised experience where I could adapt my skills and competences to specific requirements and needs. At the same time, it was important for me to find the right work-life balance where I could spend quality time with my family and have the freedom to prioritise both work and personal commitments in a balanced way. I realised that the path for me was not to be a manager in an agency, but to create a more personal and individual approach to my work.
These considerations resulted in my two partners, Lau and Andreas, buying me out of Meresalg Aps in 2018. For me, it was an opportunity to start over and continue my journey as an entrepreneur. I founded my new company, CCO ApSwhich focuses on my passion for WordPress programming and web development. There is only one employee in this company and that's me. This new direction gives me the freedom to explore and utilise my technical skills while offering a personal and direct approach to collaboration.
Although splitting our company was a big decision, it was the right way to go to fulfil our individual goals and ambitions. We realised that we could thrive better by pursuing our respective passions and strengths separately. By specialising, we could build in-depth knowledge and refine our skills. Although we now operate as separate entities, we still have a strong relationship with each other and keep in touch. We cherish the time we had together and the experiences we shared during our journey together and to this day we still collaborate and utilise each other's skills.
The decision to go back to being a freelance web developer rather than an agency was and still is the right one for me because it allows me to offer this personalised and direct approach to my work, which I really appreciate. I have the freedom to work and collaborate closely as an additional resource at different companies. I feel it provides a unique and valuable opportunity to immerse myself in the projects and the companies I work with.
Since 2018, I have been running my company LENNARTC/CCO ApS from Esbjerg. LENNARTC represents a small Esbjerg-based web development and web design company. We are known for our down-to-earth approach and ability to deliver a personalised service, especially when looking for someone specialising in WordPress programming and design.

Technical skills and commercial insight as a web developer
As a web developer, I combine not only my technical skills but also a commercial mindset. I have an attitude and a practical understanding that enables me to create coherence between design, identity and functionality. I believe that the work we do should have a positive value both today and in the future.
When I work with companies, I always strive to be a close sounding board. I want to understand their needs and goals so I can deliver customised solutions that help them succeed. It's a great feeling to be part of a team and contribute to the company's development. I also enjoy working behind the scenes, knowing that my contributions help shape a webshop or project. There is a certain pride when, for example, a webshop or brand shop develops.

From Photoshop to Web Designer to WordPress Web Developer: The Combination of Code and Creativity
For many years, more than 10 years in fact, I have been working with WordPress. In the beginning, I saw myself more as a web designer than a web developer. I focused on creating visually appealing websites, but I quickly realised the importance of having in-depth knowledge of the code behind it. I didn't want to settle for cheap standard solutions based on templates.
My basic philosophy is that I want to have full control over the code as much as possible and offer scalable customised WP solutions. Over time, I also started expanding my skills and exploring new areas such as developing WordPress plugins, APIs and other exciting features. So today, I can rightfully call myself a web developer with expertise in WordPress.
My graphic design skills still play an important role in my work. I carry a good amount of creativity in my toolbox, which means that my projects are not only well-coded, but also aesthetically pleasing. I believe that the combination of solid coding and aesthetic appeal is the key to creating well-crafted work.
So, in short, I'm a Web developer with a focus on WordPresswho can combine technical expertise and creative flair to deliver great results.
